Getting Started with Breast Pumping

Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet with a variety of food types and stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and smoking.

Create a routine as you can condition your body to express more easily by pumping with the same ritual or setup each time.

Do not be discouraged if your milk does not flow immediately. Find relaxation outlets and continue pumping! Start with a few minutes at a time on each breast. Practice until you find the pumping technique or position that works for you. If the process becomes painful, stop and consult a healthcare professional or breastfeeding consultant.

During the first few days after childbirth and before you produce any breastmilk, using hand expression and massage is often the most effective way to produce colostrum, the first milk you produce when starting to breastfeed.

To choose the correct suction strength, start from the first cycle and slowly increase the cycle each time, once you reach a cycle that does not feel comfortable (experienced as pain or discomfort), then decrease it by one cycle. For example, if the first, second and third cycle feels very comfortable, but the fourth cycle does not feel as comfortable, then you should be using the third cycle.

When you are having your letdown, you should switch from a Stimulation phase to Expression Phase for suctions that can better empty your breasts.

Single vs. Double breasts pumping: Pumping from both breasts simultaneously is more effective at stimulating prolactin levels and increasing milk production. It is also more time-efficient when compared to single pumping. Typically, a double pumping session can be as short as 10 minutes while a single pumping session may last for 20-30 minutes. If you are having difficulties double pumping in the beginning, start with single pumping on alternate sides then move on to double pumping as soon as you can.
